Today in Introductory Wood, I spent six hours sketching and planning my wood carving of a leaf—I absorbed its particulars and dissected my own moral subjectivity to a degree that I now have a more holistic understanding of the healing properties of Yoga.
I sensed skepticism behind Dennis's approval. He
wasn't upset that I had not yet begun carving with the rest of the class, but my approach contrasted last week's extreme, where I instinctually turned out an Art Deco knife in the shape of a woman.
After class I spent time with Roberta and Tom, who nagged me to begin carving and I retorted by venting about Dennis's nagging (!!!). After I showed them the sequence of my sketches and rumination, we engaged a philosophical journey and I realised that all the
architecture is pointless because I barely have a tactile understanding of the wood!
Perhaps if my Sculpture Elders were not backlit by shiny buildings and people who don't exist, I could focus on what they're saying—which is to just do the assignment. Perhaps if I suspend my Manifest Destiny for the process the essence will reveal itself beyond expectation.
